The two cantons have their own offices and rules. Choose where your property is located.
The Building and Hospitality Inspectorate (Bau- und Gastgewerbeinspektorat), department of building permits and inspections, reviews applications, sets the procedure and issues the building decision.
Depending on the project, a permit, a notification or nothing at all is needed. The BGI decides on the procedure.
Refurbishments, renovations and conversions of rented flats may fall under housing protection and require an additional permit.
The cantonal building inspectorate processes and approves building applications in all municipalities. Exception: Reinach has its own building inspectorate.
Building applications can be submitted online. Since April 2025 the canton only provides approved documents digitally.
According to the canton, documents submitted early and complete allow faster processing. We take care of that.

Who issues building permits in Basel?
In Basel-Stadt, the Building and Hospitality Inspectorate (BGI) is responsible. In Basel-Landschaft, the cantonal building inspectorate processes the building applications of all municipalities except Reinach, which has its own building inspectorate. We clarify in advance which procedure your renovation needs and take on the building permit application.
Do I need a permit in Basel-Stadt to refurbish a rented flat?
Possibly. Housing protection rules apply in Basel-Stadt. Refurbishments, renovations and conversions of rented flats may fall under them and require an additional permit. We clarify this for your property before planning starts.
How long does a renovation in Basel take?
Depending on the scope, between a few weeks and several months. In Pratteln we renovated two bathrooms in three weeks, and a flat in Basel before moving in in six weeks. If a building permit is needed, the procedure is added.
Do you also work in Baselland?
